Xcajum, “the place of sounds”
You hear Xcajum before you see it. Down the stone stairway the vault begins to echo: swallows singing from the walls, spring water murmuring a hundred and thirty feet below. The ancient Maya named it for exactly that — X'cajum, “the place of sounds.”
The cenote was born millions of years ago, when the peninsula's limestone gave way and revealed a cathedral of turquoise water open to the sky. Today four lookouts ring its rim, and a stairway winds down to the water, where the midday light falls in columns.
What began as the best-kept treasure of Dzitás — minutes from Chichén Itzá, on the road to Pisté — has grown into a full ecotourism park and tour operator, guiding travelers from around the world through the heart of Yucatán.
Because Xcajum is far more than a swim: it's the Xilam Balam restaurant and its Yucatecan buffet, ATV trails weaving through the jungle, small-group tours to Chichén Itzá, departures from the Maya Train station, and round-trip transportation from Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Valladolid and Mérida.
